Creating a birth plan is an important part of planning for birth because this is where you get clear on what your ideal birth looks like, on how you want to be supported, what your options are, what you want and don’t want. This is also where you start to have conversations, with your partner, family, care providers and so on.
As you create this “plan” know it is really about learning your options, discovering your fears and apprehensions and working through them. In the end, we must have a plan, but we also need to be flexible. We cannot control birth; birth and motherhood is a lot about letting go of control. But when you are prepared, when you have done your homework, you know your options and you can make informed decisions. If you do not know your options, you have none.
